Abstract

This study assessed the role of e-data management in enhancing data records keeping in primary education in Mbeya City Council, Tanzania. It examined the status of e-data management programmes usage in records keeping in primary education; examined the record keeping challenges faced school heads in primary schools emanating from the use of e-data management; and determined strategies to enhance e-data management in primary education for record keeping practices. This study employed mixed research approach and descriptive research design in ten public primary schools in Mbeya City Council. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, documentary review and observation. The Findings indicated that e-data management for record keeping in primary schools were mostly done by using Primary Records Manager (PReM), FFARS, School Information System (SIS), BEMIS and PLAREP. It was discovered that documents such as letters and, spreadsheets, multimedia presentations, emails, online transactions, text files, examination results, websites records, image files, and video and audio recordings, employee files, pupils’ registration and enrollment statistics, transfers and financial reports were the major records kept in as e-data. The record keeping challenges faced by school heads on e-data records keeping were poor school e-data management infrastructures such as computer rooms and internet cables, unreliable power supply and inadequate funding. It was concluded that districts IT teams should conduct training to school heads for their understanding of e-data management and effective record keeping for education and national development.
