Abstract

This study assessed the factors influencing sustainability of public water projects in North A district of Unguja Zanzibar. The aim of this study was to see how the public projects fails to deliver water service to the public for a long period of time. The general objective of this study was to assess the factors influencing sustainability of public water projects in North A District of Unguja Zanzibar. Along this, the study adopted the mixed approach using a cross sectional design. 130 respondents were selected as a sample size drawn from the study population. In this study, data were collected through questionnaire, interviews and document reviews as the methods of gathering information and analysed by using content analysis technique and descriptive statistical analysis. The findings of this study indicated that there is low involvement of the community members in the water projects. In addition, the study revealed that, the community has the perception that project practitioners appreciate their sole responsibility on the executed project and instead thought of themselves as mere recipients of the project development. Therefore, the study concluded that community participation in conception, design, implementation and maintenance of water projects influencing sustainability of public water projects. However, there is a gap between the community and project practitioners that is caused by the little contributions of the community during the decision making process. Furthermore, the study recommended that the community members should be involve in all stage of water project so as to ensure sustainability of water projects since by doing so enable them to build a spirit of ownership which is important of sustainability of any project.
