Abstract

The study examined corruption practices and their effects in public health service received by clients of Mwananyamala Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Specifically it determined corruption practices, consequences and measures that could be employed to combat corruption in Mwananyamala Hospital through a sample size of 100 respondents. The study used positivism descriptive research design. Data were collected through structured questionnaires which were administered to service users’ of Mwananyamala hospital. Descriptive statistics was used in the sense that the study observed both measure of central tendency was percentage and frequencies used to present findings. Results found out that most common corruption practices at Mwananyamala hospital were petty corruption, theft of medicine for sale, bribery, diverted supplies and medicine done for private gain, diversion of patients from public to private hospital or pharmacies, mobile money transfer as a way of transfer money and health workers collude with private pharmacist to sale medicine on their behalf. Regarding the consequences of corruption the study found reduction of service utilization and satisfaction, led to clients distrust services, forced poor to stop treatment prematurely, and leads to disrespect of the patients and at the end patients do not get proper treatments. Measures suggested include that government should impose severe penalties on corruptions, health professionals to be held accountable, whistle blowing policy to be established, health workers compensations in terms of salaries and allowances to be reviewed and the prosecutions of health officers who seem to be corrupt.
