Abstract

There is an insufficient effort of the government to formalize the rural areas. Much emphasis is put on urban areas through land regularization. The general objective was to assess the impact of land formalization on income among small scale cotton farmers at Meatu district in Tanzania. The study was conducted in Meatu District through a descriptive cross-section research design. A sample size consisted of 346 respondent’s selected using purposive random sampling procedure. Data were collected by the aid of questionnaire and interview and were analyzed through descriptive statistics. The t and p-values showed the impact of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The result showed that the construct ‘compulsory exerted the highest predictive strength on overall income with a βeta weight of 0.245 (the large t-value and corresponding low p-value (0.000) further buttressed the result for compulsory purchase of land which had the highest Beta coefficient (both for standardized and unstandardized). This was closely followed by bank responses (β=0.235). The least factor negatively influencing income towards land formalization was lease agreement ((β = -.026). The result showed that 71.2 percent (R2=0.712) of the observed variance in income were jointly explained by the independent variables (compulsory purchase of land, lease agreement and bank responses). The study concludes that compulsory acquisition of land if not well managed may displace farmers and lowers the income of majority of the poor farmers. Conversely, most farmers are not aware of the legislation on government‘s compulsory land acquisition. The study recommends that there is a need to enhance flexibility in the formulation of policies relating to long-term land leasing. Keyword: Cotton, Land, Formalization, Income.
