Assessment of Social Media Usage for Seeking Information by College Students: A Case of Buhare Community Development Training Institute (BUHARE-CDTI) Musoma – Mara Tanzania.

Abstract
The study assessed the social media usage for seeking information by college students, a case of Buhare Community Development Training Institute (CDTI) Musoma, Tanzania. The specific objectives were to investigate the extent to which social media networks serve as a reliable source of information for college students, to assess the extent use of social media by college students; to examine students’ perception on relationship between social media usage and academic performance and to determine the association existing between social media usage and college students’ academic achievement. Data were collected by using questionnaires involving 273 respondents who represented the population 930 students of Buhare CDTI. The simple random sampling techniques were used to select the respondents involved in the study. The results showed that 93.4% of respondents reported that social media sites were reliable source of information, while 88.6% of respondents revealed to have been accessed social media sites in their academic life. Still, 86.1% of respondents reported that there was open relationship between extent use of social media and their academic performance, and 90.1% of respondents acknowledged that materials from social media sites. The study exposed that students were facing 3 main challenges of Internet bandwidth high cost, identifying the author of materials retrieved from social media sites due to information overload, and failure to discover the reliable information to be used on academic references due to flood of information from social media. Finally, it is clear from the current study that social media platforms are reliable source of information to be used by college students in their daily academic life as they contains reliable information for academic issues.
