This study investigated the influence of Guidance and Counselling Services (GCS) on secondary school students’ academic performance in Tanzania: A case of Tanga City. This end was fulfilled through research objectives including to determine the status of the implementation of Tanzania government circular number 11 of 2002, to examine the relationship between students’ access to educational GCS and their academic performance, to examine the relationship between students’ access to career GCS and their academic performance. The study employed a mixed method approach that utilised a correlation design and a case study design. The study’s sample size was 423 respondents, including 330 students, 26 heads of schools, 33 guidance and counsellor teachers, 33 academic teachers, and one City Educational Officer. The study used questionnaires with close and open - ended questions, and semi - structured interview guides for data collection. The findings established that the Tanzania government circular number 11 of 2002 had been successfully implemented in Tanga city secondary schools and is helpful to the students; however, it is faced with challenges related to the inadequacy of facilities. The findings also showed that educational GCS strongly influenced the students’ academic performance. It was also learned that career GCS, and psychosocial GCS influenced students’ academic performance. The study concluded that GCS positively influenced students’ academic performance and recommends the establishment of a strong policy on school GCS which is supported by an Act of parliament to oversee the effective implementation of the services in the schools.
