Abstract

The study assessed factors affecting effectiveness of schools as organisations in Muheza District. Three objectives were involved in the study including: to examine the extent to which leadership styles is the factor to school effectiveness, to investigate on effects of infrastructures to school effectiveness, and to examine teachers’ qualifications and its effect to school effectiveness in Muheza District. The study was done qualitatively and a case study design was used where Muheza District was selected as the area of the study. Data were collected by interview and questionnaire. The findings show that leadership style is one of the factors that play a great role to the effectiveness of school organisations. Furthermore, the findings also reveal that teaching and learning processes should go hand in hand with the good infrastructural facilities. Lastly, it was found that for better teaching and learning outcomes, teachers should equip themselves with frequent professional training to improve their teaching qualifications and other attributes as raised by the respondents. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the government should think of establishing some leadership qualifications based on some academic qualifications and other supervisory skills for somebody to be appointed as head of school. In addition, the government should ensure that there is adequate redistribution and presence of infrastructure and other resources that equate with the available number of populations to the respective schools, and lastly the government should encourage more professional training to teachers and encourage high level of academic qualifications requirements.
