Abstract
Beekeeping or apiculture is the maintenance of bee colonies, commonly in man-made hives, by humans where bees stay and produce honey. Beekeeping in Tanzania is one of the businesses that are gaining economic momentum and it is gaining the popularity. The study conducted Community Needs assessment at Vigwaza Ward whereby several community needs were identified. The overall objective of the project was to find out the challenges that the community is facing and resources which are available in the community design the project which will help them solve the challenges they are facing as the community. After conducting a community needs assessment; the group faced different needs such as access to financial institutions for getting loans, improving the use of technology with modern beehives, improve institutional framework by increasing honey and beeswax productivity through training managerial skills, marketing skills and market expansion. Hence improving of traditional way of beekeeping to modern way with modern beehive will encourage self-employment and livelihood opportunities through beekeeping. The tools used to gather information included household questionnaires, focus group discussions, interviewing and observation. The project outputs resulted where by 30 group members were trained on honey and beeswax production, 50 beehives were bought and installed, 2000 trees were planted, the group were officially registered and the sustainability of the group were left in the hands of the group members. The implementation of the project was based on community needs assessment which was carried out during the participatory assessment process. In all the above procedures a community economic development student was used as a Facilitator.
