Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of social media on secondary school students’ academic performance in Tanzania in Kinondoni Municipality, Tanzania. Specifically, the study aimed to examine social networks used by students in secondary schools, to determine effects of social media in student’s academic performance in secondary schools; and to evaluate strategic measures used to improve students’ academic performance in secondary schools. The descriptive research design and mixed research approach were adopted to study 54 respondents. The findings revealed that, Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Sanpchat were common social network to the students. However, the study findings revealed that, Twitter is not common social network to the students. The study also indicated that, social media causes too much off shortcut system when writing that can affect academic writing particularly in examinations. Social media also causes less concentration on learning activities, wastage of time, and failure to observe academic activities. Meanwhile, introducing academic links to social network, provision of lots of homework. The study concludes that, social media has negative impacts if they are not used effectively.
