Abstract

Tanzania like many other developing countries, still faces poor infrastructure. Effective systems to ensure universal access to quality and affordable public services, among other things is through improved passable (good/fair condition) rural roads. Developing new roads or rehabilitating existing roads often improves personal well-being through improved access to economic and social opportunities, including education and healthcare. This is often a rationale for road projects. This paper describes the community participatory process towards implementing a road rehabilitation project in the South Mecco community in Nyakato ward, Ilemela district in Mwanza City. The process started with problem identification through community needs assessment. Through the community participation, the community needs assessment identified the extent to which the residents in the South Mecco street are satisfied or concerned with available social services in the community. The project aimed to fundraise road construction resources from various stakeholders and to construct the road. It also aimed to build capacity to community members on community projects management.
