Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the approaches used and challenges encountered by heads of schools in dealing with student’s discipline. The study followed a qualitative investigation, which is explorative, descriptive and contextual, using interviews with heads of schools to collect data. The heads of school were also able to share their experience on different disciplinary problems in their respective schools. The results showed that the heads of school used multiple approaches based on the nature and type of discipline problem they encounter. Majority delegates task of maintaining student discipline to other staff. It was discovered that although they had adequate knowledge on policies pertaining to management of students’ discipline due to availability of guidelines issued by MoEVT. However, they didn’t receive any formal training after appointment. Majority perceived policies as non implementable due to lack of cooperation from other stakeholders or interference from higher authorities. However some of heads failed to provide good leadership and crate differences among other staff leading to sense of mistrust and power struggle. More efforts are needed to empower head of school on different leadership skills for approaching student’s misbehaviors.
