Abstract

The study aimed to assess the awareness and challenges on briquette production from forest processed residues in Mufindi district. Three specific objectives developed by the study were; to determine the availability of forest processed residues that can be used for briquette production in Mufindi district; to assess briquette production awareness to community stakeholders and to examine the challenges facing briquette production from forest processed residues in Mufindi district. The study covered communities surrounding Mufindi paper mills and Sao Hill forest industries and it involved sample of 118 respondents from the community and key informants. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents from communities while purposive sampling technique was used to select the key informants who were involved in the current study. The qualitative data collected through interviews and documentary review were analyzed using content analysis technique and results presented in a descriptive way, Quantitative data collected through interviews using questionnaire were presented in numbers, percentages, frequency distribution, tables and figures. It was found that forest processed residues were available in the study area in a large quantity but small quantity were used for briquette production. Again, it was found that more than 80% of people lacks knowledge on presence of briquettes in their communities and procedure for briquettes production. Result also shows that, more than 85% of respondents mention poor and shortage of technology, lack of trainings and policy related challenges affect them on engaging on briquette production and its uses. It is recommended that, the government should be responsible to ensure the society produce and use briquettes as an alternative source of energy for the sake of safeguarding the environment.
