Abstract

This study assessed the factors affecting the medical waste management in hospitals public hospital in a case of Coast region Tanzania. The study to respond the three objectives including first to determine the current sustainable practices on medical waste management, second to determine the influence legal framework on sustainable medical hospital waste management and lastly is to determine the influence technology sustainable on medical hospital waste management. To achieve this study, the mixed approach was employed involving 202 respondents from Tumbi hospitals. The generated data were analyzed using SPSS version-20 and presented in table, circle and chats to make easy data make sense. The findings of the study indicated positive practices related to sustainable medical waste management in public hospitals The majority of respondents recognize the importance of waste segregation 56%, transportation using recommended vehicles 91.1%, use of recommended treatment methods (95.5%), and training of waste management staff (98%). There is also support for the national environmental policy (96.6%) and guidelines for medical waste management in hospitals 94.1, as well as the inclusion of stakeholders in guideline development (92.6%) and another framework were positive recognized. The study reveals the dominant use of incineration (98.5) as a disposal system, with a need to explore alternative technologies. The study concluded that based on the findings there are the problem in hospital. This was observed from the initiatives done in fighting against the problem. But also, the initiative done need to be extended so as to add more impact so as to reduce the impact which can be associated with improper hospital waste management to the patient, community and environment at large. Finally, the findings recommend the importance of prioritizing sustainable waste management practices and the need for education and training programs to enhance compliance and awareness among healthcare workers.
