Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
Engaging in social responsibility issues is a deliberate decision where companies consider its pros and cons with thoughtful consideration of community involvement mode in the course. This study has examined the role of Corporate Social Responsibility of parastatal organizations to the improvement of quality of life of the societies in the project areas in Tanzania with the study case of Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO). This study used random and purposive sampling techniques to get respondents whose sample size was 80. Interviews, questionnaires, and documentary reviews were used to collect pertinent data.Quantitative data was analysed using descriptive statistics through software known as SPSS, where charts, percentages and frequencies were used to present data. In a highlight, the study revealed a number of findings including its single major CSR project focus which was environmental protection related; limited degree of TANESCO contribution to the local community through CSR; poor local community involvement in almost all stages of CSR projects development including planning and monitoring; and the impracticality of CSR policy owned by TANESCO where its existence and implementation never matched. The study has recommended several issues including the involvement of effective internal and external auditing to realize utilization of CSR projects funds and the possible irregularities and establishment of a special government body or institution responsible for monitoring implementation of CSR in organizations and companies operating in Tanzania to ensure that CSR implementation becomes mandatory.
