Assessment of the Effect of the Russia-Ukraine War on Imported Products in Tanzania.
Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
Efficient import and export regulations are vital for trade growth. This study assessed the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on wheat imports in Tanzania, focusing on Dar es Salaam. It explored Tanzanian government policy responses to the war's social and economic effects. The study employed a qualitative descriptive study design, engaging key informants such as Tanzanian port authorities, Ministry of Industry and Trade officials, and importers from Azania and AZAM. Data was collected through in-depth interviews and document reviews, analyzed thematically using ATLAS ti. The study revealed both positive and negative impacts on wheat imports in Tanzania due to the Russia-Ukraine war. Negative effects include increased shipping costs, inflation, loan difficulties, and trade quotas. To tackle these challenges, the government responded by allocating land and budgets for wheat production. On a positive note, the war created job opportunities for Tanzanian youth. In summary, this study identifies both positive and negative impacts of the Russia-Ukraine war on Tanzania, affecting social and economic aspects. To proactively address such crises, we recommend measures like subsidizing shipping costs, reducing trade barriers, and diversifying trade partners. The government should allocate budgets for research, farmer support, and market expansion while fostering collaboration among government and importers. Developing a robust trading system and investing in local farmers are crucial for a stable food supply.
