Abstract

This study assessed the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on tourism dependent communities livelihoodin Monduli District, Tanzania. The focus was to analyze the change in socio-cultural and socio-economic as an impact of COVID-19 pandemic and the strategies adopted to minimize the impacts. The sample size was 155 respondents selected using purposive, snowball and convenience sampling techniques. Data were collected by a questionnaire, focus group discussion, observation and documentary review. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical. The study revealed that the most profound socio-cultural impacts of COVID-19 pandemic were limited gathering, poor livelihood and loss of lives. The socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 pandemic were the loss of jobs, loss of revenue and business closure. The study recommends that the government should conduct feasibility studies and business plans in the area to assist communities to develop a package that diversify the economic activities instead of depending on one source which is tourism. Also should prepare a risk management plan awareness, training and manualwhich will help to sustain similar shocks in future hence minimizing the impacts among the communities. The study insists the government in collaboration with other development stakeholders to establish skills development programme and support trainings especially on entrepreneurship and hospitality in order to facilitate enterprises growth and expansion which will stimulate job creation and transformation in different sectors. The study furtherrecommends that future studies should be to assess government interventions on tourism and hospitality industries to foster recovery efforts.
