Abstract

The present study assessed the effect of rewards on the job satisfaction of prison officers working at Arusha Central Prison. Three specific objectives guided the study; to determine the effect of financial rewards on job satisfaction among prison officers at Arusha Central Prison, to establish the effect of non-financial rewards on job satisfaction among prison officers at Arusha Central Prison, and to determine the effect of the benefit package on job satisfaction among prison officers at Arusha Central Prison. The study was based on positivist research philosophy. The research approach of this study was quantitative, and the research design was explanatory. The population of the study was 330 prison officers, and the sample size was 168 respondents. Data were collected using structured questionnaires, and analysis was done using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The findings showed that financial rewards such as salaries, allowances, promotions, and bonuses were perceived to be essential for job satisfaction among prison officers at Arusha Central Prison. Secondly it was indicated that non-financial rewards such as appreciation and recognition, career growth opportunities, and job autonomy were positive and significantly related job satisfaction. Thirdly it was revealed that the benefits package comprising compensation for occupational injury, health insurance, mental wellness program recognition, transport facilities, and decent housing significantly affect job satisfaction among prison officers at Arusha Central Prison. Based on the This study recommends that implement a structured and regular system for reviewing and adjusting the salaries of prison officers secondly, establish formal and informal recognition programs to acknowledge and appreciate the hard work and dedication of prison officers and lastly, conduct regular reviews of the benefit package to ensure it remains competitive and aligned with the evolving needs of prison officers.
