Masters thesis, The Open University of Tanzania.
Abstract
The study assessed the contribution of motivation to the performance of the organization in Public Primary Schools in Dar es Salaam. The study was mainly guided by three specific objectives which were served as research questions to fill the knowledge gap of the study. Those objectives are to examine factors that influence teachers’ motivation in performance of public primary schools in Dar es salaam; to determine motivational factors that lead to teachers’ performance in public primary schools; to examine how teachers’ motivation leads to good school performance and how it leads to bad schools performance. The study was conducted to provide answers to research questions emanating from the mentioned objectives by using qualitative research design. 60 people were interviewed from 10 public primary schools, officers from regional education office, Tanzania Teachers’ Union and one from education partners’ organisation. The gathered findings were analysed using content analysis technique with the findings complemented with themes to support the results of the study. Findings showed that there are several motivation factors influencing school performance including salary, working conditions (including workload itself, few teaching facilities, and lack of proper offices), teachers’ living environments and relations between teachers and the parents or teachers and head teacher and sometimes teachers with pupils. Despite that, the study revealed ways which motivation influence or affect good performance in public schools for that matter. The study recommends that in order to increase performance in public primary schools in Dar es Salaam, factors to teachers’ motivation should be well addressed.
