Abstract

The problem under this study was poor delivery performance of engineering spare parts by suppliers at Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) Mwanza Plant. Specific objectives include assessment of procurement procedures and practices adopted by an organization whether can influence delivery performance by suppliers, to determine the causes of demand and lead time variability, identification of competencies of stores and procurement personnel and to establish whether the kind of relationship TBL engages with its suppliers can facilitate or hinder timely delivery performance of spare parts. In this study the research strategy was case study. The sampling frame consisted 300 workers and the sample size included 50 workers. The study employed purposive or judgmental sampling technique. The researcher collected both primary and secondary data and methods of data collection included questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The findings revealed that procurement procedures and practices adopted by TBL are appropriate as they align to the procurement cycle but the problem is the poor implementation and control of them by staff and management of TBL thus hinders the satisfactory delivery performance by suppliers. This study concludes that most of the findings have shown that delivery performance of engineering spare parts by suppliers can be improved by TBL organization by reviewing regularly its performance and take appropriate measures immediately before things go wrong. The study recommends to the management of TBL to ensure procurement procedures are communicated, known and adhered by all staff responsible. To ensure good quality of spare parts purchased, provide on the job trainings and good relationship between TBL and its suppliers
